LÉONARD PONGO - PRIMORDIAL EARTH

Assistant Curator, Project Coordinator at Sorbonne Artgallery

26 September - 4 November 2023

Primordial Earth explores the diversity of landscapes in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Artist Léonard Pongo offers us an allegorical imagery of the country. Imbued with a sense of magical beauty and mystical power, the landscape becomes through his eyes a place of self-reconstruction, and the earth the origin of a consciousness from which tradition, philosophy and conceptions of the universe emerge. For him, it's from wandering through the environment and sensory experience that a vision of the world emerges, and it's by becoming one with the landscape that it's possible to envisage life. Drawing on Congolese traditions and Kasai cultures, Primordial Earth presents the landscape as a character with a will and power of its own. This photographic series functions as an open book that tells a certain story of humanity and the planet, centered in the Congo.
